‘Waris Punjab De’ chief Amritpal Singh arrested by Punjab Police from Moga district of Punjab, on April 23, 2023.
On April 23, the Punjab Police took Amritpal Singh into custody from Moga. He is a pro-Khalistan propagandist and the head of the organization Waris Punjab De (WPD). He is being investigated for violating the National Security Act (NSA). Amritpal was detained a month after the police launched a large-scale investigation into him and his organization.
According to Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Headquarters Sukhchain Singh Gill, Amritpal was arrested today (April 23) at approximately 6:45 a.m. from Rode village in the Moga district as a result of a special operation that was carried out over the course of the previous 35 days. Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, the militant leader who was killed in 1984, was from the village of Rode.
Amritpal Singh was the subject of warrants issued by the NSA, which were executed this morning. Amritpal was taken into custody by the police at Rode village in the Moga district at approximately 6:45 in the morning on April 23. At this location's press conference, Mr. Gill stated, "Further law will follow its own course."

According to Mr. Gill, Amritpal had been missing for about a month. Amritsar Police and Punjab Police's intelligence division launched a special operation to capture him. The police used operational information to locate him in Rode village. After that, the village was surrounded. Mr. Gill stated, "He was inside a Gurdwara, but the police did not enter the Gurdwara to preserve its sacredness... Amritpal knew he couldn't escape, so he was arrested and sent to Dibrugarh (Assam) under NSA."
In the midst of reports about Amritpal's acquiescence, Mr. Gill said "Amritpal Singh was captured in light of functional data sources. He had no other choice but to flee. He was detained.
Amritpal's rise to fame or notoriety began last year when he was named head of the "Waris Punjab De," a social organization founded by actor-turned-activist Deep Sidhu. Amritpal actively participated in the farmers' agitation against the three farm laws drafted by the Centre over the course of a year and brought up issues that were centered on Punjab. In February of last year, he was killed in a car accident.
Under the NSA, nine of Amritpal's staff members, including Daljit Singh Kalsi, Papalpreet Singh, Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal, Varinder Singh Johal, Gurmeet Singh Bukkanwala, Harjit Singh, Bhagwant Singh, Basant Singh, and Gurinderpal Singh Aujla, have been imprisoned in Dibrugarh jail in Assam.

The strict National Security Act (NSA) was used by the Punjab Police against the Khalistan sympathizer. The activity came practically more than three weeks after Amritpal's allies raged Ajnala police headquarters in Amritsar on February 23, requesting the arrival of one of his helpers, Lovepreet Toofan. The nonconformists conveyed a duplicate of the Master Granth Sahib, the sacred book of the Sikhs, as a safeguard.

The demand was granted by the Punjab government of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), but the incident acted as a trigger for the coordinated crackdown that the Punjab police launched against Amritpal Singh, a propagandist for the Khalistan movement.
Amritpal has been charged under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for causing discord among classes, attempting to kill, attacking police officers, and obstructing public servants from carrying out their duties in a legal manner. After giving the police the slip on March 18, when his cavalcade was intercepted in the Jalandhar district, he had been on the run for more than a month. At least half a dozen criminal cases have booked the 30-year-old.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab, which has been in place for a year, has come under fire for the poor state of the law and is now seen as on the defensive as a result of the police's failure to apprehend Amritpal following the crackdown against him and all those attempting to disrupt the state's law and order.
